Thanks Paul
That's a Bummer. Any projected date as to when it may be? What about the trail higher up on the way to Wilson, that goes through the tunnel, by Mt Lowe, down to Echo Cyn, El Prieto to JPL? Can't remember what it's called... |

We have had a similar discussion on SCOA. I even blogged about it just yesterday - http://www.scoaoutdoo...

Thanks Chris'
Wow, SoCal really sucks for biking these days. If the trail's not closed for "restoration" due to fire, it's closed to bikes because of well-organized hikers. AAAGGGGGGHHHHHHH We need a revolution!!! I moved to Topanga, in the mountains so I could bike from my porch. I was shocked to find that ALL of the singletrack is closed to bikes, even Backbone that is otherwise open in all other areas. This is ridiculous. I have to load up my bike and drive a half hour just to ride, surrounded by trails and most days there are very few people, if anyone even using them. We should organize and campaign to get some trails open!!!!! I talked with some rangers awhile back, they were friendly to the idea. It just needs mass support. What do you think? |

Unfortunately a few "bad" bikers make it a problem for the vast majority. It is a constant battle keeping trails open. Your might want to join CORBA who's mission is to keep trails open to mountain biking and maintaining the trails as well.
The trail through the tunnel from Mt Wilson was closed way before the fire because of ongoing slides that occur as you exit the tunnel. One day last year I found the tunnel completely filled with debris all the way to the ceiling of the tunnel with only a small opening at the very top. There had been a massive slide that had actually broken off part of the tunnel itself, wiped out the road and partially filled the canyon below. Two guys ahead of me crawled through the opening with their bikes and inched their way across the slide path. Because of my fear of heights I decided not to attempt the crossing. The following week I saw the same 2 guys who told me I was lucky I changed my mind because another large slide came down just after they got off the slide path. I would have been in it and would probably have been killed. That slide was cleared and more debris came down in successive weeks prompting the Forest Service to close it. Riders continued to cross it until the Station Fire closed the forest. The Station Fire closure reamains in effect for the area including the upper Merrill, Sunset Trail, the upper part of the road as well as any other trail that is actually within the burn area I believe? |

Wow, that makes a cool story...
Seems like everytime I rode that trail I came back with one. Last time I rode that a guy went off a cliff, he was lucky though, it was one of those "if he had been a foot or two in either direction he would have tumbled 1000 feet stories". It took us an hour to beat his wheel back in a shape that would allow him to ride back. Lucky he could even ride back. I called CORBA awhile back about Topanga, they never returned my call. I was able to help open a trail in Fryman Cyn years back, it was a struggle but after enough people got behind it the Rangers opened it up. There were plenty of bad biker stories we had to overcome then as well. But hell, do we allow the roads to be closed to motorcyclists because of foolish riders? Unfortunately not... We have scores of those up in Topanga. With all the closures and restrictions it's getting hard to get a nice ride in. I think if we all got together and contacted the Rangers we could see some success. |
