Hi- I am a new rider and am looking for some suggestions on beginner trails. I am getting tired of just doing Westridge fire road. Haven't gotten comfortable enough to do single track yet.
Any suggestions are appreciated. Andrea Edited by Andrea Bardack on May 28, 2009 3:20 PM |

you can try Sullivan canyon, as you go toward Westridge trail head, turn left at Bayliss, this will lead you to the trail head. You probably should have someone guide you on this or any new trail.
Also CORBA has a guided beginners ride on the 2nd Saturday of every month and a free mt. bike skills class on the 1st Saturday of every month. Check out the CORBA websit. The Beginners ride is at Sycamore Canyon, Pt. Dume. you can ride this without taking the class. It is fairly flat, fire road, with stream crossing and a fun single track. I have led this group once and it's a lot of fun. |

Hi Andrea,
I'm a new member to the SoCal Mountain Bikers group. I'm looking to ride with someone on beginner trails on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. If this works for you, please let me know. I've been riding with 2 groups (one being the sister group 3F) for the past 3 months and am looking to do some riding in LA. Thanks, Florita |

Malibu Creek has a few more open and relaxed trails too. Only ridden it once, but I started from the park at the intersection of Las Virgenes Rd & Lost Hills Rd in Calabasas.
Here's a link to a google map of where I'm talking about. Good luck, and have fun! |

I started out on the trail that starts right by JPL in Altadena. I think its called the gabrielino trail, but not 100% sure that's what they call the lower part it.

A good place to get some fairly easy miles in is the area behind Verdugo Hills Hospital in La Cananda, also known as Cherry Canyon.
Fun little area to do quick workouts or bring someone who's a beginner or intermediate. Fire road climbs with lots of little single tracks along the way. Again, nothing technical. You can make it as easy or as hard as you want by incorporating or making loops. Can get hot as there is not much shade, however, these last 5 days or so with the morning fog and all, it is nice and cool up here compared to the Basin or the Valley. Looks to be similar weather for the next week or so as well. After that, consider taking the trails around the JPL area east of the Devil's Canyon wash. 210 Fwy, Windsor exit in Altadena, follow north tothe mountains until curve, park in the lot or on the street and proceed through the gate to the access to the National Forest. Lots of hikers so be careful, but plenty of room for everyone. DIRECTIONS FOR CHERRY CYN: Take the 2 Fwy north stay in the right lane towards 210 West Pasadena, take the Verdugo exit, turn right on Verdugo, at the second light turn right onto Descanso, continue as Descanso curves left and turn right at Padres Trail, left at Forest Hill Dr, end of Forest Hill begins the fireroads and accesw to the trail system. also has some fun singletrack to pratcie and get comfortable with.
