Announcing a new Meetup for Southern California Mountain Bikers!
What: Rocky Peak and Chumash Loop
When: Saturday, June 19, 2010 8:00 AM
Where:
Rocky Peak trail head
7900 Santa Susanna Pass Rd
Chatsworth, CA 91311
I am posting this a little later than planned but I hope some of you can make it. This is a ride I have not done with the group before but it is a nice one with some great views, mostly fire road but some fun downhill single track as well. Most importantly, you must not mind climbing as it is a good deal of it.
It should be a nice weekend for riding with warm temperatures (high of 82F or so). We'll start early to enjoy the cooler temperatures.
The Plan:We'll meet at the Rocky Peak Fire Rd bridge by the trail head at Santa Susanna Pass in Chatsworth at 8:00 AM and start the ride at 8:30 AM SHARP. If you're late, you'll have to catch up. If you got time to spare it is a good idea to bike around a little to warm up.
The ride starts off a bit rough with a steep climb up the Rocky Peak Fire Rd. We'll continue up the fire road and take a little break by Rocky Peak (~267m/875ft elevation gain) and enjoy the view. From there we'll continue on the Fire Rd and take a left on to the Chumash single track trail. This is a fairly challenging single track with steep and technical sections but a fun downhill ride. The most technical spots near the top may be a hike-a-bike for most.
Down at the bottom we'll ride a short distance on pavement and then head up the Las Llajas Canyon Rd up to the "Oil well Rd". This is another fairly steep fire road climb of 195m/640ft back to the Rocky Peak Fire road, which we will follow back to the cars.
Route Map:take chancesClick here for a map of the route.
Distance:16.6 miles, 16% single track, 81% fire road, and 3% pavement.
Time Required:I expect about 3-4 hours or so riding time.
Difficulty:I would rate this an Intermediate to Advanced ride do to some significant climbs and a technical and steep single track. It is doable for well conditioned intermediate riders, but they may want to do some hike-a-biking on the single track section in some spots. If you are unsure if this is a good ride for you, feel free to contact me (Stein).
Directions/Parking:It is easiest to find parking at the intersection of Santa Susana Pass Rd and the Rocky Peak Fire Rd, at the south end of the bridge crossing the freeway. Going west on the 118, get off at the Rocky Peak exit. Going east, it's more complicated as there is no exit.

IMPORTANT:Mountain biking is an inherently risky sport, especially for those who tend to
take chances. You can get hurt. As event organizers we assume absolutely no responsibility for you or your equipment. We are simply mountain biking "buddies", nothing more. If you choose to participate you assume all risk involved. Also:
- Always wear a helmet when mountain biking. This is mandatory, no exceptions.
- Make sure your bike is in good working condition, with the tires properly inflated and the chain lubricated prior to the ride.
- Protective pads, gloves etc are recommended on more technical rides.
- Know your limitations, and do not attempt what you are not comfortable with. Hike-a-bike is no shame.
- Bring at least one spare tube, sunscreen, energy bars/food and enough water. Hydration packs are encouraged.
- If you have two-way radios, toolkit, pump/co2, or first aid kit, bring them.
- Be familiar with and follow trail rules and etiquettes.
