While this trail is always epic last weekend the heat beat us down a bit. Today was just the opposite with the trail and the sand wash wet, windy with cool temps and snow on the mountains. Started in a bit of snow but we quickly dropped out of it and we were treated to a tacky trail all the way to the bottom. Sand wash was like a dirt road and the Art Smith Trail put smiles on our faces. Maybe the last weekend to ride it as temps go into the 90's this week. Anyone up for doing it tomorrow I'm down.
As usual the ride was epic but it is definately getting hotter and the ride window is closing down. Temps got up to 87 and the blazing sun drained us. The sand wash was significantly softer this week and required much more energy to climb it. We pretty much decided that we won't do the ride any longer once the temps are in the upper 80's or for sure the 90's. That said this coming weekend the predicted temp for Saturday is 69. One thing that is quite awesome is the blooming cactus and of course there are plenty of cactus.
abiton the warm side today, but still such a fun ride. not too many trips left out here this season. hopefully the indians don't take over the trail in land grab this summer and we can still ride it next year.
Great weather for the Art Smith Trail plus we can't forget we got 2/3 of the Palm Canyon Trail as well. Art Smilth Trail added 2000 ft of climbing but it also added 2000 ft of descending. Hate the ups but love the downs. Fortunately it ends with a long down. Great group today.
great group of riders today. lots of fun on the trail. art smith was challenging but at the end of the day, a fun ride. thanks for leading the ride paul.
Weather was beautiful with no rain. Unfortunately there were only two of us on the ride, myself and Darren. Big thanks to Chris G, who discovered he had 2 broken spokes on his front wheel while loading, for driving us to the top before heading home. We tried to find an open bike shop to no avail. The storm stayed away all day with cool breezy conditions, which made for a very comfortable day. We tried a new route down from the tractor called the Art Smith Trail. It was spectacular and the descents were unbelievable. Problem is the descents all came with the price of a climb (many of them). The climbs probably totaled over 2000 ft. Glad it wasn't hot. Should have some pics soon.
It was terrible, it sucked, no one should ever do this ride and I'm lying. While a bit warmer than last weekend, scratch that, a lot warmer, it was still awesome. The sand wash held the moisture nicely and the rest of the trails were oh so nice. Ken you are a climbing machine. Cactus are beginning to bloom and the recent rains have actually greened things up a bit. Sweet Sweet Sweet.
Can't put into words it was so great. Started in some snow at the top which actually had really good traction. Once we got down to the canyon the snow was on the ground but not on the trail a condition that extended about 9 miles down. The weather was cold which made it so we could wear our jackets without hoting to death. Precipitation happened off and on all day but never came in the form of rain unlike Saturday. Snowing at the top, lots of gropel (a snow flake that didn't know whether to be a snow flake or rain drop and comes down like little balls but are not ice like a hail stone), some small hail all of which bounced off our clothing. The climb up the sand wash was in the sun with a tail wind and the sand was wet so it was a breeze. The entire trail had maxi-traction especially the Hann BV which was rocket, and I mean rocket, fast. Scenery was magnificent with the snow on the cactus and desert. It was a very special day and my best ride at Palm period.
Everything they said about Palm Canyon is true except, I only saw one palm tree on the ride. Gorgeous day, fantastic company and epic riding conditions made for one hell of a mountain biking adventure!
What can I say, 11 times in 9 weeks for me, 9 times in 9 weeks for Chris G, 4 times in 5 weeks for Jose, what does that tell you? Certainly this is a must do for your list of must do rides. It is a big one but so worth the effort.
To say I like this ride is putting it mildly. 9 times in 7 weeks and I would do it more if I could. Chris G and Andre are hooked as well, both doing double's this past weekend. Hum..... there must be something that draws us in? I know, it is the most awesome ride around here.
