The Trail:
It's all downhill. Honestly, the first part, the steepest will fur sure get your attention! Sturtevant trail > Spruce Grove > Chantry via (Hoegee > Winter Creek) or (Gabrileno) > Santa Anita meeting and ending at the base of Santa Anita Ave. We will call an audible during the descent.
The Plan:
We'll start at in the JPL Parking Lot, at the north end of Windsor Street. Do not expect to be able to park in the parking lot as this is a very popular riding location. Look for the Silver SUV towing a while trailer full of mountain bikes, that is our shuttle.
The shuttle will take us to the top of MOunt Wilson, where all those tv antennas are - about 5000' MSL! The Sturtevant Trail starts at the top near the observatory we will have a choice of several trails that will take us all the way to Santa Anita Avenue in the city of Arcadia.
The shuttle will come get us and our bikes and bring us back to the JPL parking lot.
Distance:
15 miles - 80% technical single track, 10% single track and 5% fireroad and the last 5% pavement.
Time Required:
Plan on 4 hours of riding and an hour and 20 minutes of shuttle time.
Difficulty:
This is not a beginner's trail. We recommend helmet and body pads (optional) - a full face helmet is not a bad idea either but again not a requirement. We'll take the time we need; nobody will be left behind.
Extended Option:
There are too many extended options to list here. Literally we could spend all day on the mountain and could make several loops. Everybody talks about doing the Gabreilino Trail to the west - it is epic. We have the logistics to do it to the east. Less crowds. Longer trail. More variety with 2000' of climbing. . .
Directions:
From all directions, you want the Windsor Exit off the 210 Freeway. Head north towards the mountains. If you do it correctly, Jack in the Box will be on your left. Follow Windsor north until it "Ts" into Ventura. Just before it "Ts" you will see all the cars and the riders parking. Look for the silver SUV with the white trailer and park near it.
Parking:
Parking is free.
Finally:
We will be doing a couple loops so I nor Stein can be on all of them. Your loop will probably have: Mark, Regardless of which biking "buddy" you have, they will be knowledgeable and capable.
IMPORTANT:
Mountain biking is an inherently dangerous sport, especially for those who tend to take risks. As event organizers we assume absolutely no responsibility for you or your equipment. We are simply a mountain biking “buddy”, nothing more. If you choose to participate you assume all risk involved. Also, please adhere to the following:
Too much snow on the route! We will postpone the event and refund everybody. Perhaps the best thing to do is go get your skis or board and hit the slopes!
Refunds offered if:
Additional notes: If you need to cancel - no problem. Change your RSVP to 'No' AND drop me an email directly so we can fill your spot.
Payments you make go to the organizer, not to Meetup. You must make refund requests to the organizer.
FYI: Actual ride route is to be determined depending on how much snow is on the ground and overall weather conditions. Also, the Sturevant trail is closed for the winter. We'll either come down the Mt. Wilson Toll Rd, Mt. Lowe fire road, or possibly start at Redbox and do the Gabrieleno trail east. We'll decide when we meet up.
