Mt. Wilson Toll Road Challenge

This location is shown only to members

So I am signing up to do the World's largest mountain biking XC race next month (http://www.birkebeine...) with 17,500 participants. The bad news is I am not likely to make the top 1000, probably not even the top 5000 :( The good news is I am not likely to come in last ;) I therefore need some serious training to prepare myself and I figured some of you may want to join me for some training and challenge yourself as well.

The Challenge:
To ride the entire Mt. Wilson Toll Road from the gate at the bottom to the top of Mt. Wilson, a climb of about 4,500 ft over about 9 miles, in under 2 hours.

The Reason:
It helps to set a concrete goal to motivate me to go faster. It is also satisfying to achieve it (if I do).

The Route:
While the trail is pretty much all climbing (to the top), it is also quite scenic and has a lot of great views. It is also a lot of fun riding back down. Below is a link to a map of the ride:

Click here to see a map of the trail and a playback of my past ride(s).

The Plan:
We'll meet by the gate on Pinecrest Dr. in Altadena at 5:15 PM and start riding at 5:30 PM SHARP. This is the latest I can start to make sure that I can make it to the top and back down again before it gets dark. As selfishly as it sounds, this ride is all about me and my training. Therefore, there is no breaks, unless I need one, and the pace is as fast as I can go. I will however, wait at the top until 8 PM and greet anyone who can make it up before then.

At 8 PM I'll have to head down in order to make it down before it gets too dark. The decent takes about 30 minutes or so if you are a pretty fast downhill rider. You should aim to be down by 8:30 so if you are not so fast, you'll need to head down earlier.

Distance:
About 18 mi round trip, 100% fire road.

Time Required:
3 hours (or less).

Difficulty:
Technically, this is an easy ride as it is just a fire road. Endurance wise, this is a challenge however as it is all climbing to the top. Both beginners and advanced riders can do it, although it may be too steep for some beginners. It is really a great way to challenge yourself and I welcome anyone to try and see how far you get before you'll need to turn around. If you are a beginner I'd aim to make it to Henninger Flats before 8 and then turn around. You are also welcome to start earlier if you like.

You are all welcome to try to keep up with me and I hope at least some of you do. If you are faster than me you are welcome to hang with me and motivate me, or you're welcome to ride ahead and inspire me.

IMPORTANT:
Mountain biking is an inherently risky sport, especially for those who tend to take chances (video). You can get hurt. As event organizers we assume absolutely no responsibility for you or your equipment. We are simply mountain biking "buddies", nothing more. If you choose to participate you assume all risk involved. Also, please adhere to the following:

  • Always wear a helmet when mountain biking. This is mandatory, no exceptions.
  • Make sure your bike is in good working condition, with the tires properly inflated and the chain lubricated prior to the ride.
  • Protective pads, gloves etc are recommended on more technical rides.
  • Know your limitations, and do not attempt what you are not comfortable with. Hike-a-bike is no shame.
  • Bring at least one spare tube, sunscreen, energy bars/food and enough water. Hydration packs are encouraged.
  • If you have two-way radios, toolkit, pump/co2, or first aid kit, bring them.
  • Be familiar with and follow trail rules and etiquettes.

If I can get the brakes bled on my geared bike then I'm in! I'm a desent climber and under two hrs sounds like a tough challenge to me! I can't get my brakes bled by then maybe I'll take my single speed and just go as far as I can.

Hey Stein, don't forget that they usually lock the Mt. Wilson Toll Road entrance at 8PM. No problem if they do, you'll need to exit at Eaton Canyon Center (at the bottom) or cross the stream @ Roosevelt and Altadena. FYI

I would love to come...but need to find a ride from santa monica. I'll check with a buddy to see if he wants to go...so I'm a "maybe" for now.

Thanks Chris for the warning. Last time it was still open at 8:30 PM so hopefully that will still be the case tomorrow. It's good to know there is an alternative exit though.

Sean, hope you can make it.

For your consideration Stein, I make it to Henniger Flats in about 43 minutes. To be clear, I am not the fastest but not the slowest either. Regardless, it takes a lot out of me and that is in the coolness of the AM sun. All that to say you *may* want to consider bailout options if you don't make it to the top in 3 hours. While we never really bombed it, the beginner mountain bike shuttles on Mt. Wilson Toll Road took a little over an hour to get down - say an 1+15 minutes. Hope that helps.

When you reach the Henninger Flats sign you are 28% of the way to the top. This should give the riders a good idea of where they are at and how they are doing. A beginner rider should expect at least 15-20 min to get back from here. Starting at 5:30 PM you have 2.5 hrs to make it to the top, unless you have lights. Bringing a flash light is a good idea, just in case something happens. If you descend slower, start heading back at 7:45 or sooner.

FYI: To make it to the top in under 2 hours, you'll need to be at the Henninger Flats sign in 34.5 minutes and keep that pace. To make it in under 2.5 hours you'll need to be at Henninger Flats in 43.5 minutes and keep that pace.

Go Stein go! I look forward to reading your notes and seeing your splits. It would probably take me ALL day to get up that hill. Enjoy the process and take photos!

Making it to henniger in 34.5 minutes isn't to much of a problem, but keeping that pace the whole way with no breaks is tough! Plus the heat usually slows me down drastically and sucks the life outta me!lol My legs are actually a little sore today and this heat isn't really very encouraging but i will see how I feel around 430-5 and maybe just come out and ride a bit of it. If I don't see you there good luck! And like chris said report back!

Matt, you're right, one tends to slow down so realistically you'd need to aim for about 30 minutes to Henninger Flats to make it in 2 hours. My legs are sore too from a pretty intense road ride on Tuesday night so it may be a bit too ambitious of a goal for me as well tonight. I guess I'll find out soon enough.

Thanks for coming out Stevo and Matt. Stevo made it to the top as well. Good job. And Matt rode with me up to Henninger Ridge on his single speed. Impressive. Hope to see more of you guys on future rides.

I was about 23 minutes behind Stein, but loved the ride. It was getting dark by the time I reached the peak & drizzling. Came 8.5 miles downhill in the dark (I need to give a high 5 to the person who invented HID lighting). Exited through Eaton Canyon, extra 400' climb on streets, returned to car at 10pm, I was beat. Thanks Stein, great meeting you & Matt. Stein, you set a pretty good pace, could not keep up & I don't know how Matt climbed so well with no gears.

Well, my under 2 hrs attempt did not go so well. Was hoping that the heat would have subsided a bit by 5:30 but no such luck. It was HOT. I also got my chain stuck on my bike and figured I was already well behind schedule so I gave up my attempt at 2 hrs even before Henninger Flats and took it easy. Turns out though, when I got there I was right on schedule, but with the heat, we decided to take a break. Was considering turning back actually but decided to keep going. Turns out it cooled down a bit further up so I ended up going to the top after all. Actually made it in 2:17 although I took a bunch of breaks and kinda took it easy since I was not attempting any records. Hmm, maybe next time I'll make it.
