Mt. Wilson Toll Road - Henniger Flats+

Mt. Wilson Toll Road Gate (map)

Selected By: Chris Ashford

Overview: While the Mount Wilson Toll Road isn't technical, unless you are barreling down it at 40 MPH, it is a relentless climb. *About* 14 miles long and some *4700'* elevation change. Lets climb from the base to Henniger Flats about 2700'. Time permitting we will go further. The idea is to keep the ride to 1.5 hours.

When the riding is done, let's stop by SCOA HQ for a BBQ. SCOA will provide the grill, the heat and a trash bin. You provide food, drink and everything else you might need.

The Plan: Let's meet at the "Gate". At 205lbs, I am not much of a climber. Climb as fast as slow as you want. After an hour and 15 minutes turn around and head to HQ. When I turn around, I'll collect anyone behind me. Those in front - well - watch the clock. The idea is to leave no one on the mountain. If you have a radio, bring it 77.

We will head back to the vehicles and make our way to SCOA HQ (5 minute drive, 10 minute ride). We will start up the BBQ and let the conversation flow like a nice cold beer. If you want to ride longer - you can. Meet us back at HQ when you are done.

Audibles: If no one wants to BBQ we just keep riding. After the ride we can head back and drink a cold one. When El Prieto opens back up, I look forward to riding it instead. Stay tuned.

The Trail: The Mount Wilson Toll road is a big fat fire road strewn with loose rocks and sand but it is a fire road. You'll have to Google the specs if you want them. If you are a strong Novice you will do fine.

BBQ Location: No BBQ this time - HQ is located at: 2518 Santa Rosa Ave, Altadena. If you need me Hit me up [masked]. If you need to text send it here [masked]. Cell coverage is spotty so plan ahead.

I have an event downtown later that night that is going to take precedence over this one. Two options: 1) move the start time to 5PM - then LC cannot make it. 2) I can leave the start time as is and let Stein or RobV 'host' the event.
Either way there will be no BBQ. Note there are Tuesday and Thursday ride options as well.

Well if others can keep the current start time, that's good.

Done - the time stays. I'll do my ride at 5PM if anyone wants to join me. RobV if you wouldn't mind looking after the group to make sure they get a good start? Thanks

I actually did the ride a 5 with Chris. Henniger is a grind up but I do this ride for the workout and to get away from the city. Is it the most scenic? No. Is it an easy climb? No. Is descending a road over a single track better? NO. Are the views great? Yes. Do I have a sense of satisfaction every time I do it? Yes. Will I do it again and again? Yes. Is Chantry Flats to the water tank tonight better? Yes, yes, yes.

Really enjoyed the climb. Great workout with great views. We just went a little past Henninger Flats. Had never been up there before so it was nice to see some new scenery. Also, not everyday you're riding along with a big parrot ;-) Bart was not kidding.
