GMR aka The Monroe Truck Trail (We will do Our own shuttling) 8am
Here is the location we are meeting : 1044 Glendora Mountain Rd, Glendora, CA, 91741 (Google or Map quest for directions)
The trail is a mix of wide open, "flowy" fire road to over grown, technical and rocky single track. It is simple: go fast the ride is advanced, go slow to reasonably paced the trail is beginner to intermediate. Yes the trail is safe for beginners. If you have never ridden a mountain bike before, we will set you up with a buddy to ride down. There are several options to GMR: the main road, the Big Dalton cut-off and what I call the "Go" option.
All options start at the intersection of Glendora Mountain Road and the Monroe Truck Trail. After a few miles of skimming the ridge-line, the trail gives way from wide fire road to 'sinuousy' single-track and 'dives' into the canyon. The trail twists and turns throws rocks at you and is generally what we've come to expect of the San Gabriels. . .
Difficulty:Advanced - Beginner
Trail type :Fire Road to Single Track to Rock Gardens
Logistics :Shuttle
Distance:5.9 miles
Altitude Change: ~ 2,426 ft
Gear:Anything from a well maintained hybrid to a 40lbs downhill machine will do. Dual shocked X/Cty to All-Mountain bikes will do the best as there is some climbing (~100 yards, 100' elevation gain easy to accomplish in the middle chain-ring). Wear long pants and shin guards as my scratched up and 'poison oaked' legs will tell you. If you have the other pads and the full-face bring 'em. I still wear clip-ins and get laughed at. But it is a mixed bag of riding. Go with what you are comfortable with.
Details:We will Do our Own Shuttling,I have a truck and have fit 14 bikes on it before. We can split/chip in for the gas cost depending who else helps me with the shuttling..
I can fit 15 bikes but only 5 passengers. we will work it out once there.
was the plan to ride this saturday, regardless of how much it is raining? only 20% chance of rain on sunday...is it worth holding off til sunday or damn the torpedos...ride sat no matter???
Chris G Im shooting for saturday as i also lead the La tuna ride on Sunday, but from what I heard we should have a good window saturday morning to ride. Lets just keep our eyes on the weather and see how it looks friday night. If weather does permit Kane has agreed to help out by bringing a Carpool van for the shuttling. Thanks again Kane.
The main trail is doable in the rain. Only thing I would be concerned about is the lower section that goes through all the rocks. If a flash flood were to happen, that would not good! Also, I'd stay off the ridges as they're likely going to be a slush fest of slippery mud. The single track off to the left, if used, should be ridden upon lightly if at all.
Unigeezer - planning to ride the unibike? It would be awesome to see that in the rain!
FYI: If anyone wants to go slow down this route, you can hang with me. I'm bringing my XC bike and am going to stick to the easy stuff.
bring the rain coats just in case we get a little drizzle,If you have walkies lets use them...this is going to be a fun weekend...also if we get enough sign ups we might have access to a very cheap shuttle that can carry 17 passenger and bikes...
what would the shuttle cost? what would be the min number needed?
Chris G/All One plan for the shuttling is if Kane brings his Carpool Van, we could load up the Passengers in the Van and Load the Bikes on My truck and me and him could take turns with 2 other persons so that we could get a ride in as well. Prob Looking at like 10 per person for Fuel cost on both Vehicles so that we can all get a nice 3-4 maybe 5 runs in smoothly...
. Or Just Help each other out with the Vehicles we bring. First thing is first I know there was a really bad fire up there and It looks like There will be mud slides on the road so later tonight i will need to find out if the Road will be open....Ill keep everyone posted....
sounds cool. good idea about checking out the road in advance. i saw crews doing prep work last week to get ready for the rains but you never know.
Rain for tomorrow is predicted for most of the day as well as this evening. If it rains hard the canyon will have water in it and depending on the amount of rain, could be impassable? Even if it does not rain tomorrow everyone should be prepared for the wet off the bushes along the single track portions.
bring your scuba gear for the ride (swim?) thru the canyon...
8am-10am on sat...60%-70% chance of rain, 54-58 degrees. bring your sun screen...UV index of 1 !
Hey all I just got off the phone with the Forrest Service and The Glendora Mountain Road and Trail WIll BE Open....
hey everyone we will most likely have a window in the morning to ride nice and dry.. see you all at GMR...eat some breakfast...and bring your water.
it's coming down Heavy in my area,I dont blame you if you dont go. Ill be up there regardless for those that do show up..
Its only sprinkling right now, and then at 7am its only a mere 25% chance of rain!!!
