Whiteman Airport Parking Lot
12653 Osborne Street
Pacoima, CA 91331-2192

Updated by Mark 12-21-2009: Ashford is Australia until the 24th, so I've been collecting info for this ride from our very knowledgeable members. Paul and Matt - thank you!

The plan is that we'll all meet up at Manning Park for the first run at 7AM. There will be additional runs down the mountain approximately every 2 hours after that.

On your first run, we recommend that if you've never ridden this area before, that you opt for the San Ysidro trail first. The San Ysidro is more intermediate level and much smoother than the Cold Springs trail.

Here's a 3D Google Earth view of the San Ysidro trail:

And here's a video of the San Ysidro Trail:
http://www.youtube.co...

How to get back to Manning Park from the end of San Ysidro Trail:
1) The trail ends at the end of W Park Ln.
2) Head south on Park Ln toward Park Hill Ln
3) Turn right at E Valley Rd
4) Take the 3rd left to stay on E Valley Rd
5) Turn left (southwest) at San Ysidro ROAD and continue to Manning Park
Distance: Approx. 2.1 miles

Here's a 3D Google Earth view of the Cold Springs trail:
http://files.meetup.c...

Check out a video of the Cold Springs trail here
http://www.youtube.co...

How to get back to Manning Park from the end of Cold Springs Trail:
1) The trail ends at E Mountain Rd
2) Head southeast down E Mounain Rd toward Ashley Rd
3) Take the 3rd right onto Hot Springs Rd (south)
4) Take the 1st left onto E Valley Rd
5) Turn right at San Ysidro Rd (south) and continue to Manning Park
Distance: Approx 2.7 miles

How to get back to Manning Park from the end of the Romero Trail:
1) The trail ends at Bella Vista Dr
2) Head right to Romero Canyon Rd (west)
3) Turn left on Romero Canyon Rd (south)
4) Romero Canyon Rd turns and heads west, then south again - stay on it
5) Turn right on E Valley Rd (west)
6) E Valley Rd turns south for a bit and then west again, stay on it
7) Turn left on San Ysidro Rd (south) and continue to Manning Park
Distance: Approx 4 miles

Oh yeah and be sure to bring a bell. Wearing it is a must. We don't want these trails to get closed to MTBs.

Romero Canyon Rd - which starts just a little bit further down Camino Ciello from the top of San Ysidro - looks like an all downhill fireroad run. Has anyone tried it?

I believe Romero has single tac as well as fire road? Not sure it is worth the shuttle up to ride down it?

Most recent comments I read were that there used to be some single tracks, but that most were bulldozed and that most of the remaining ones have been closed. I guess "is it worth it?" is a relative assessment considering that we're all driving 3-4 hours to even get to the starting point. Would it be worth all that hassle just to come down a fire road? No. But if I was goign to do all three trails in one day and document them (which I plan to do) then yes.

Thanks for the info update. Its been a while since I have done Romero from the top. I liked Cold Springs and San Ysidro better so I have stuck to those. I rode the bottom half of Romero a few months ago it was intermediate single track (Reminds me of El Prieto if you've rode this trail) followed up by fire road. I may try out this one once on this trip to scope it out for the future.

Evelyn the directions from the base of the trail back to Manning Park are here just for reference. That doesn't mean you're going to be left by yourself on the trail!

Anyone who rides with me will not get left behind. I'm slow! And I'll be taking lots of photos. So if you want a photo of yourself, don't get too far ahead!

My plan: 1st trail, Romero, 2nd: San Ysidro, 3rd: Cold Springs. But that's not necessarily the plan for everyone so choose the rides that you think suit your skill level the best.

Thanks Mark for the additional information. Beside the bell, helmet, and gloves, do I need knee and elbow pads?

If you have pads, bring them. If not, just be careful.

Pads are a good thing for these trails. They are mostly all down hill so why not? Why not wear them if you have them. Cold Springs has a fairly long rough section that any landing on the ground would be on hard ground or rock. San Ysidro has a relatively short rock garden with somewhat more exposure than Cold Springs. Evelyn- someone will stay with you.

Matt lots of us have extra parts and extra bikes. What do you need? Worst case, you can help us all out by driving for us and I assure you we'll return the favor on another shuttle run.

I lost a whole piece of my thru-axle on a previous ride and didn't even realize it till later. I was able to convince a retailer to sell me an axle off a new bike, but it looks like I am still missing a sleeve that goes between the axle and dropout. I think I will be able to ride without it for now. So I am back to 'Yes'

Chris. Mark said you are looking for a driver to get a vehicle up to SB tomorrow? I plan to meet you at 5 at Whiteman so if you need me to drive I can.

Well I finally arrived at my swank Super 8 motel in Goleta (yeah I was too cheap to stay in Montecito or SB). Cool thing is there's internet! Anyway, glad we have Paul to drive one of the vehicles to SB. And I'll volunteer one run as a driver if needed.

Wow! Great as advertised. These trails have something for everyone and some stuff not for everyone (fortunately you can walk those). Rain was predicted which never happened and a "filtered" sun was present instead. It was not a cool as our previous session and we got an extra run in (4). For future reference the Romero trail (road) has an easy way down that most beginner riders could navigate. There is a single track portion that is an option but that one becomes very rocky. The dirt road avoids the rocks and ends up at the same place at the bottom. Thanks to Mark and Chris A for "taking one for the team" and driving down.

Great group of crazy mountain bikers. A little more challenging than cross country. It was great!!! Thanks Paul and Mark for lending me some gears. Special thanks to Mark for staying with me all the way down and giving me many riding tips.
