Lower Santa Ana River Trail - Shuttle Ride

Circle K (map)

Selected By: A former member

UPDATE 11/27/09: Shuttle service not available for this day, so we'll be doing it by ourselves. There's no fee for this ride

If you've ever done the usual Santa Ana River trail, I can tell you that the lower half is a bit more challenging, a lot more dangerous, and has WAY better views. The lower half is suitable for intermediate level riders and above.

Photos of our last trip (lower half) begin here:

We'll be meeting at the Circle K parking lot just before we hit Hwy 38 and will then drive to the bottom of the trail, where we'll leave the cars. You can purchase a Forest Adventure pass at the ranger station on the way in. (Required to park.)

The TOPO map below shows the entire SART trail system. We start our ride half way down near the Angeles Oaks Post office at about mile marker 13 and yes, there is climbing involved (about a mile). But there's also 8 miles of single track followed by several miles of a fairly steep fire road down. So it's worth the pain!

You'll have the most fun on a big bike, but keep in mind that there will be some climbing and some hike-a-bike sections.

And here's an elevation profile. Our part of this profile begins at about mile marker

We were there but good weather wasn't. The little storm that passed through the area Friday night dumped more snow out there than it did in the San Gabriel Mountains. The snow level was down around 4000 ft. When we attempted to go up to the start area we needed chains or FWD. While I had FWD the other cars didn't and no chains. As a result we turned around rather than risking not being able to get back up for my car. Not to be quitters we went over to Mt. Baldy and did the Sunset Peak trail/fire road that runs all the way from Cow Canyon Saddle on Glendora Mountain Road/Mt. Baldy to La Verne 1 block from my house. My neighbor was kind enough to drive the four of us to the start point. The weather was brisk and once on the front side we were treated with a fantastic view of the entire basin including San Bernardino, Riverside, Corona, Orange County, and the L A area all the way to the ocean. Oh. can't leave out Catalina. It was truly spectacular.
