Chesebro and Las Virgenes Canyons - 3 ride options based on ability level

Chesebro (map)

We need 2 YES RSVPs to make the ride go. Trying to mix it up a bit.

Join me for what should be a great ride in Chesebro and Las Virgenes Canyons in Agoura Hills. This area is very popular with mountain bikers and has a lot of great trails. It is also quite scenic. As the first part of this ride is perfect for beginners I have decided to provide 3 ride options depending on your abilities - "Beginner/First Timer", "Beginner Plus to Intermediate", and "Intermediate Plus to Advanced". Watch the video segments below which shows sample portions of each ride option.

The Plan:
All three groups of riders will start at the same time and ride together for the beginner portion of the ride for about 3 miles or so up the canyon. Then the beginners will go back the same way. The rest will continue up the steeper and more challenging single track to Sulpher Springs/Shepard's Flat, and from there do the easier portion of Sheep Corral Single Track. Here we will split up, some of us doing the easier Chesebro Ridge fireroad to Edison Road while some of us doing the most challenging section into Las Virgenes Canyon and then climb back up Edison road to the ridge. Which ever group gets there first wait for the other. We'll then proceed together back down to Chesebro Canyon and back to the cars on a different route. Each option is very simple to follow so no group will get lost. I'll also bring maps just in case.

Distance:
Beginner/First Timer: 6 miles - 100% fire road.
Beginner Plus to Intermediate: 9.5 miles - about 20% single-track and 80% fire road.
Intermediate Plus to Advanced: 10 miles - about 45% single-track and 55% fire road.

Time Required:
I expect about 2 - 4 hours or so depending on ride option etc.

Difficulty/Videos:
I actually highly recommend this ride for Beginners/first timers. It starts out very easy and as you get higher up the canyon it gets increasingly steeper and more challenging so it is a great way to gauge yourself. You can turn back at any time when you feel it is getting too difficult and go back the same way you came. Below are video segments from each level of difficulty to give you a better idea of what to expect for each ride option:
Beginner/First Timer: Lower Chesebro Canyon
Beginner Plus to Intermediate: Upper Chesebro Canyon
Intermediate Plus to Advanced: Sheep Corral Single Track

Directions:
Take 101 North/West to Agoura Hills and get off at Chesebro Rd. Go North on Chesebro Rd. for about mile and turn right just before the houses. A little further up you'll get to the parking lot.

IMPORTANT:
Mountain biking is an inherently risky sport, especially for those who tend to take chances. You can get hurt. As event organizers we assume absolutely no responsibility for you or your equipment. We are simply mountain biking "buddies", nothing more. If you choose to participate you assume all risk involved. Also, please adhere to the following:

  • Always wear a helmet when mountain biking. This is mandatory, no exceptions.
  • Make sure your bike is in good working condition, with the tires properly inflated and the chain lubricated prior to the ride.
  • Protective pads, gloves etc are recommended on more technical rides.
  • Know your limitations, and do not attempt what you are not comfortable with. Hike-a-bike is no shame.
  • Bring at least one spare tube, sunscreen, energy bars/food and enough water. Hydration packs are encouraged.
  • If you have two-way radios, toolkit, pump/co2, or first aid kit, bring them.
  • Be familiar with and follow trail rules and etiquettes.

  • You must be a member to post a comment. Join or login.
