Beginners - Mount Wilson Downhill Run w/Shuttle - (11:30AM)

Loma Alta Park (map)

Selected By: Chris Ashford

Here is how it works:
We load up the bikes onto a trailer for transportation to the top of Mount Wilson. Before starting the ride down, we pour over a map to determine the most enjoyable route commiserate with your equipment, skill level and time constraints. Our favorite route is the Gabreilino Trail. It can take upwards of 5 hours, had varied terrain and breath taking views. The Eaton Saddle is all downhill with some of the best single-track in the region. Depending on which route you take plan on as little as an hour and a half but up to three hours. To sign up RSVP here. For more information click on the link or give me a call [masked]

If you have questions about mountain biking in general take a look at this page - So you got a mountain bike, now what?.

Also - if you do not want to pay the shuttle charge, come get your carpool on. We have room for 16 bikes. You can get a ride with someone to the top. RSVP 'No' and in the comment section state that you are looking to carpool to the top of Mt. Wilson.

After all that riding, join Southern California Mountain Bikers for a bbq in the park! SoCalMTB will bring the charcoal some dogs, burgers and some gatorade. If you want something different - bring it. Even those that are not planning on riding that day are welcome to join us.

IMPORTANT:
Mountain biking is an inherently dangerous sport, especially for those who tend to take risks. As event organizers we assume absolutely no responsibility for you or your equipment. We are simply a mountain biking “buddy”, nothing more. If you choose to participate you assume all risk involved. Also, please adhere to the following:

  • Always wear a helmet when mountain biking. This is mandatory, no exceptions.
  • Protective pads, gloves etc are recommended on more technical rides.
  • Know your limitations, and do not attempt what you are not comfortable with. Hike-a-bike is no shame.
  • Bring at least one spare tube, sunscreen, energy bars/food and enough water. Hydration packs are encouraged.
  • If you have radios, toolkit, pump/co2, or first aid kit, bring them.
  • Be familiar with and follow trail rules and etiquette.

Wow! What a ride, Redbox to JPL, and it took everything out of me, which really surprised me. I'm beat. A good part of it was not being prepared with some electrolite replenishment. About an hour from the end I was cramping up in the quads and feeling a bit out of it. But it tapered off after I took it slower and relaxed more until I could get a Gatorade at the store. Great to meet others from the group on the ride up

Thanks to Chris for the shuttle and info/talking story.

Wish I could have made it but I had to work that weekend. Sundays are hard for me. Any chances on the shuttle running some Saturday?

Well I think that the run we ending up doing was more of an intermediate run because the beginners' run had been damaged by weather. The route we rode was the Gabrielino Trail. I drank every drop of my 3 liters. There is a ton of fun to be had on this trail. There are also plenty of sections where you need to hike your bike. It looks like this trail has suffered from storm damage too. If you ride Gabrielino, expect your bike and possibly your body to show a little wear afterward. My pedals are probably a few grams lighter now :) I was really happy I got to do this trail. It was the right trail at the right time. Just what I needed to sharpen my skills. One more thing: Make sure you eat a BIG breakfast and take your lunch with you plus plenty of energy bars/snacks. You'll need them to sustain your energy levels throughout this 15 miler.

It was awesome for a fire trail! We all had a blast and worked as a team. Can't wait to try the advanced trails up there with you guys.
