Updated by Mark 12-21-2009: Ashford is Australia until the 24th, so I've been collecting info for this ride from our very knowledgeable members. Paul and Matt - thank you!

The plan is that we'll all meet up at Manning Park for the first run at 7AM. There will be additional runs down the mountain approximately every 2 hours after that.

On your first run, we recommend that if you've never ridden this area before, that you opt for the San Ysidro trail first. The San Ysidro is more intermediate level and much smoother than the Cold Springs trail.

Here's a 3D Google Earth view of the San Ysidro trail:

Well I finally arrived at my swank Super 8 motel in Goleta (yeah I was too cheap to stay in Montecito or SB). Cool thing is there's internet! Anyway, glad we have Paul to drive one of the vehicles to SB. And I'll volunteer one run as a driver if needed.

Chris. Mark said you are looking for a driver to get a vehicle up to SB tomorrow? I plan to meet you at 5 at Whiteman so if you need me to drive I can.

I lost a whole piece of my thru-axle on a previous ride and didn't even realize it till later. I was able to convince a retailer to sell me an axle off a new bike, but it looks like I am still missing a sleeve that goes between the axle and dropout. I think I will be able to ride without it for now. So I am back to 'Yes'

Matt lots of us have extra parts and extra bikes. What do you need? Worst case, you can help us all out by driving for us and I assure you we'll return the favor on another shuttle run.

Pads are a good thing for these trails. They are mostly all down hill so why not? Why not wear them if you have them. Cold Springs has a fairly long rough section that any landing on the ground would be on hard ground or rock. San Ysidro has a relatively short rock garden with somewhat more exposure than Cold Springs. Evelyn- someone will stay with you.

If you have pads, bring them. If not, just be careful.

Thanks Mark for the additional information. Beside the bell, helmet, and gloves, do I need knee and elbow pads?

My plan: 1st trail, Romero, 2nd: San Ysidro, 3rd: Cold Springs. But that's not necessarily the plan for everyone so choose the rides that you think suit your skill level the best.

A humbling experience to say the least. Wish it was less cloudy because I imagine on a clear day the views would be outstanding. Lots of hikers, rocks, switch backs and other technical sections mean that there was little chance to "open up" the throttle. The area is like a mixture of the San Juan area and the San Gabriel mountains. Overall, I would say it's a great area to explore. But worth a drive from the OC just do to these trails? Maybe not.
    •  Wow! Great as advertised. These trails have something for everyone and some stuff not for everyone (fortunately you can walk those). Rain was predicted which never happened and a "filtered" sun was present instead. It was not a cool as our previous session and we got an extra run in (4). For future reference the Romero trail (road) has an easy way down that most beginner riders could navigate. There is a single track portion that is an option but that one becomes very rocky. The dirt road avoids the rocks and ends up at the same place at the bottom. Thanks to Mark and Chris A for "taking one for the team" and driving down.
    •  Great group of crazy mountain bikers. A little more challenging than cross country. It was great!!! Thanks Paul and Mark for lending me some gears. Special thanks to Mark for staying with me all the way down and giving me many riding tips.
